I was a young sailor, in the United States Navy and stationed at Chase Field, Beeville, Texas. I had originally been trained in operation of Link Trainer Flight Simulators but was in the process of changing my rate to Air Traffic Controller. I was assigned to the Control Tower at Navy Chase Field. Chase Field was an advanced pilot training field where we trained student Naval Aviators in gunnery, acrobatics, High Performance Jets and Evasive Manuevers. Indeed, after completing training at ...

Humbled. Las Vegas Controllers Continued.

Last week I had to take a VIP back to his hometown in California. Earlier in the day I departed Kanab, Utah (KNB)and made a southwesterly departure and was sure to avoid the Las Vegas Class Bravo Airspace at all costs. On the way back to St. George I realized that if I flew over the Class Bravo Airspace I could shave 15-20 minutes off of my already long flight. In my GPS I set the flight plan direct LAS then Direct SGU. I departed French Valley Airport and quickly got flight following. As ...

It was a dark night in the Nevada desert. I was working the Local Control (Las Vegas Tower) position in the Air Traffic Control Tower at McCarran airport. Around 11:00 PM and the traffic was not busy. I had a TWA B-727 on a 3 mile final for runway 25, and the next arrival was a Delta DC-87 just passing abeam BLD on a 15 mile final approach. It was in the era during which Radar Approach and Departure Control was operated from the Terminal Radar Control facility on the 2nd floor and there was ...

Night Flight out of Henderson

One day I took a student from St. George, UT to Henderson, NV. I would take them down to do their 3 towered solo landings and then we would do a night return. These days it seems that the Vegas controllers are more strict or have more on their plates. On this particular night we got a squawk code from Henderson ground to be able to get into the Class B airspace. We took off and proceeded south at which point Henderson tower handed me off to Vegas Approach. I asked to pass over the numbers ...

I was working the Las Vegas Approach Control position in the old Control Tower on the West side of McCarran International Airport. It was the evening shift and with winter, it got dark early. Bonanza airlines had two flights ready to go. One was a DC-3 on it's way to LAX and the other was an FA-27 ready to depart for PHX. The Tower Local Controller was holding the two Bonanza flight just short of runway 7 while a Western Airlines DC-6B landed on runway 25.

I had just cleared Trans World ...

I was working the evening shift at McCarran International, and had been assigned to work in the tower. I was working the "Ground Control" position and we were using runway 25 (now 25R) for arriving and departing jet traffic. As a Delta heavy DC-8 turned off the runway onto taxiway "F" he called me and said "it looks like there was someone on the runway right on the numbers when we landed."

I immediately alerted the supervisor, who started taking the arrivals ...

Another Runway Incursion Incident

Back in the early '60s we operated the Air Traffic Control Tower from the West side of McCarran International. It was an old steel frame structure that had been obtained from the USAF. The "new" tower was completed in about 1962, and we moved over to the East side of the airport near where the present tower is located.

One afternoon, while working the "Tower" position, I noticed some boys walking from south to north across runway 25 (now 25R). I called the airport ...

Henderson Near Miss

So my brother and I were flying a rich guy from Salina, UT(44U) to Henderson, NV(HND) in a Cirrus SR22-GTS Turbo. It was wind the whole way down but a relatively smooth flight.

When we got to Henderson, we had to fly around a bit while the traffic controllers were directing the other higher priority aircraft.

We landed, had lunch and started back home. When we took off, the wind started to blow us off to the left but my brother corrected with ease. All was well on out climb out. The ...

MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- It's a nightmarish scenario straight out of the movies: A passenger is forced to land a plane after its pilot becomes incapacitated.

Passanger Doug White landed this Super King two-engine turboprop after the pilot fell unconscious.

"Descend and maintain 5,000. Just take your time, we'll set you up for the airport," an air traffic controller says.

In a calm voice, a passenger responds: "I need to get my throttle set for this descent. I ...
