1 Air Traffic Control Humor on Tue Apr 14, 2009 7:42 pm

While working the Local Control Position in the control tower at MCCarran International airport, in the early 1960's, Approach control trnsfered control of a Delta Airlines DC-7 to me after clearing the flight for an approach. Here is exactly what the co-pilot said on the radio upon contacting me at the "tower" position:

"McCarran Tower, Delta eight oh nine, we're over Boulder City and the weather is fine,
we're leaving ten thousand and starting to dive, are we cleared for a straight-in to
runway two five?"

You may guess it was several minutes before all the tower controllers could regain their composure to issue the landing clearance.

3 ATC Story 2 on Tue Apr 14, 2009 9:05 pm

Although my primary occupation was Air Traffic Controller, I was in flight training for my instrument rating in the late 1970's. After having just reported the final approach fix in the flight school 182, on the VOR Alpha approach at McCarran International, the tower controller recognized my voice on the radio and said "How's it going' Jim?" At that, my instructor grabbed the mike and yelled "he's 300 feet too high and right of course, that's how it's going. I suppose all the professional pilots on the frequency got a good laugh at that.

4 ATC story 3 on Tue Apr 14, 2009 9:17 pm

I was working the Arrival sector in the Terminal Radar Control Room (TRACON) at Las Vegas, for runway 25 one afternoon. Traffic wasn't very busy on my sector, but the Runway 19 arrival controller was up to his ankles in aligators. The Flying Farmers were arriving for their annual convention. It was a nightmare. I love farmers for the wonderful job they do in supplying food for us, but it seems they don't get enough flight time to stay current. The farmers love Navions and Mooneys. I could tell the controller was very busy so I would have him send some of the traffic to me and sequence it for runway 25. While working my traffic and being aware of his traffic too, I overheard him say: "Navion Two Six Hotel, Say your heading.?" Silence. Remember in those days transponders were not a requirement, and many general aviation aircraft didn't have them. Next I heard him say "Navion Two Six Hotel, say your altitude." Silence. Next, "Navion Two Six Hotel, What is your compass heading?" Still silence. Then he said "Navion two six hotel, how do you hear me?" The pilot answered, "Navion two six hotel, loud and clear." Then I heard the controller say "Navion Two Six Hotel, are the questions too hard for you?"
Silence again.
