1 Another Runway Incursion Incident on Thu Jun 25, 2009 10:13 am

Back in the early '60s we operated the Air Traffic Control Tower from the West side of McCarran International. It was an old steel frame structure that had been obtained from the USAF. The "new" tower was completed in about 1962, and we moved over to the East side of the airport near where the present tower is located.

One afternoon, while working the "Tower" position, I noticed some boys walking from south to north across runway 25 (now 25R). I called the airport fire station and asked them to go pick up the boys. They did. There was no conflict with airplane traffic, as the boys looked both ways before crossing and then ran across the runway. After a good scolding, by the Clark County Sheriff's Deputy, the boys were released to their parents.

Many years later, I learned that one of the boys was our very own, Gary Caldwell, Professor at DSC, and Maestro of the Southwest Symphony.
He told me about the incident after I had retired and moved back to SGU. I don't think he would care if I shared this experience.
