1 Humbled. Las Vegas Controllers Continued. on Sun Oct 25, 2009 11:16 pm

Last week I had to take a VIP back to his hometown in California. Earlier in the day I departed Kanab, Utah (KNB)and made a southwesterly departure and was sure to avoid the Las Vegas Class Bravo Airspace at all costs. On the way back to St. George I realized that if I flew over the Class Bravo Airspace I could shave 15-20 minutes off of my already long flight. In my GPS I set the flight plan direct LAS then Direct SGU. I departed French Valley Airport and quickly got flight following. As I neared Las Vegas I started to get an uneasy feeling and thought for a moment about diverting to the south and avoiding the Class Bravo Airspace. I decided to press on and see what happened. A few moments later LA Center came on and said to contact Las Vegas Approach on such and such a frequency. I quickly contacted Las Vegas Approach. Being a Wednesday afternoon I expected to be diverted north or south. However, a friendly voice came on and said "Roger, where does your flight plan take you today?" Puzzled, I replied "Direct Las Vegas then Direct St. George." The reply came as follows "Roger, cleared through las vegas class bravo airspace, cleared direct las vegas, then direct st. george."
I was amazed. Flying over McCarran I was amazed to be able to see the airport from that point of view. As I came over Nellis Air Force Base I went a little ways more and Las Vegas Approach came on telling me to contact LA Center and to have a good flight.

That day I was humbled and gained new respect for the Las Vegas Controllers.
